Écomusée de l'île de Groix, Maritime heritage museum in Port Tudy, Groix, France
The Écomusée de l'île de Groix occupies a former tuna canning factory at the end of the harbor quay, displaying boats, models, drawings, paintings, and traditional fishing equipment. The exhibits document the maritime history and working life of the island.
The museum was founded in 1984 after the municipality acquired the former Romieux tuna canning factory, preserving an important industrial site. Its creation marked recognition of Groix's role as France's leading tuna fishing port.
The collection was assembled by over 350 island families and displays historical photographs, traditional clothing, and everyday objects from life here. These items tell the story of people who shaped island living across generations.
The museum is better visited during warmer months when regular hours are maintained and more guided tours are offered. Plan time to walk around the harbor as the quayside location invites exploration.
A notable option is the combined visit that grants access to a traditional farmhouse in Kerlard village, showing early 20th-century island life. This additional location allows comparison between maritime and farming traditions of the island.
