Viaducs de la Barricade et des Bergères, Highway bridge network in Aix, France
The Barricade and Bergères viaducts are two interconnected bridge structures spanning 420 meters across a valley near Aix. They carry the A89 motorway and use a box girder system to support two lanes of traffic.
These structures were built between 1997 and 1999 under the direction of architects Charles Lavigne and Alain Montois. The project responded to the need to carry the A89 motorway across the deep valley.
These viaducts represent French engineering excellence in transportation infrastructure, demonstrating advanced techniques in prestressed concrete construction.
You can view these bridges from the valley below or while driving the A89, where they are best seen from the side. Walking access is not possible since this is an active motorway.
The longest span reaches about 150 meters and required specialized studies of the ground to account for rock fractures. These geological challenges led to adaptations in foundation design that stabilized the structure.
