Église Saint-Germain de Rennes, Gothic church in central Rennes, France.
Église Saint-Germain is a Gothic church in the center of Rennes built with granite that features a rectangular floor plan and a striking large window on its western wall. The structure has a simple flat eastern chevet that gives the interior a sense of openness and light.
Construction of the current structure started in 1470 and continued for more than 200 years until 1690. It replaced an older 12th-century church that had occupied the same site along with its cemetery.
In the 16th century, the church became a gathering place for wealthy merchants and members of parliament who lived in Rennes. Their presence shaped the spiritual life of the city and made it a key location where different social circles came together for worship.
The church is easy to reach from the city center and welcomes visitors during its regular hours. You can move through the interior at your own pace to view the architecture and furnishings without obstacles.
The interior contains two 16th-century stained glass windows, one of which was reassembled from recovered pieces after World War II damage. The organ inside originally came from Notre-Dame de Prières Abbey and underwent a complete restoration in 1996.
