Église Saint-Pierre, church located in Doubs, in France

Église Saint-Pierre is a neoclassical church on Place du Huit-Septembre in central Besançon, designed with a Greek cross plan and topped by a 70-meter tower. The building sits on a raised square with clean lines and symmetrical forms that give it a formal, organized appearance.

The site hosted a place of worship from the 4th century onward, but the current structure was built between 1782 and 1786 under architect Claude-Joseph-Alexandre Bertrand. The neoclassical design replaced earlier medieval elements and gave the city a modernized focal point.

The interior holds religious artworks including a Pietà and carved decorations that speak to the spiritual traditions kept alive here. Wooden choir furnishings show the craftsmanship that visitors can still appreciate when walking through the space.

Visitors can explore the church on most days of the week, though schedules may vary depending on services or special events. The location is easy to reach as it sits in the heart of the old city on a central square, with no admission charge.

A metal cross crowns the tower top and serves as a reference point visible from across the city center. Few visitors notice this detail on first arrival, but it becomes a helpful landmark when navigating the surrounding streets.
