Église Saint-Martin d'Ardentes

Église Saint-Martin d'Ardentes is a Romanesque church built with thick stone walls, rounded arches, and robust pillars supporting its structure. A central bell tower crowned with a slate roof dominates the center of the church.

The church was constructed in two phases during the 12th century and later came under the control of Déols Abbey. A donation confirmed in 1115 by Archbishop Léodegard formally transferred it to the monastery's jurisdiction.

The church displays traces of centuries of religious practice, especially in the south transept where historical baptismal fonts rest on an ancient death stone. This arrangement makes the building's ongoing role in community life visible to visitors.

The church is located at Place Saint-Martin in the center of Ardentes and is easy to reach on foot. As an active place of worship, visitors should dress appropriately and respect any services taking place inside.

A lateral portal bears an inscription with the name Hernaud, possibly identifying the medieval builder or sculptor. This handcrafted signature offers a rare glimpse into the identity of a medieval craftsman.
