Église Saint-Martin d'Argentan, church located in Orne, in France
Église Saint-Martin d'Argentan is a stone church in central Argentan featuring pointed Gothic forms and fine carved details throughout its structure. Inside are a decorated main altar, side altar pieces, statues of the Virgin and Child and Saint Barbara, and stained glass windows that date to the mid-1500s.
Construction began in the 1400s and continued until the 1600s as artisans built the walls and vaults stone by stone. Stained glass windows were installed between 1540 and 1550, and the building was later designated as a protected historical monument.
The church is named after Saint Martin and has long served as a gathering place for locals seeking quiet moments or celebrating traditional occasions. Visitors come to admire the carved details and stained glass that have survived through the centuries.
Visit during daytime when sunlight streams through the stained glass and illuminates the stone work inside. The church sits on a quiet cobbled street in the town center, making it easily accessible to foot traffic.
The bell tower with its octagonal spire and fine lines stands out from a distance, but severe storms in November 2023 damaged it when two of its stone finials broke away. This shows that even ancient structures remain vulnerable to nature's forces.
