Île de la Dérivation, River island in Carrières-sous-Poissy, France
The île de la Dérivation is an island in the Seine between Carrières-sous-Poissy and Poissy with an elongated shape and roughly one hundred meter width. It developed from a 19th-century canal construction project and is now primarily defined by residential buildings.
The island formed in the 1880s during construction of a diversion canal for river traffic. A private owner acquired it shortly afterward and shaped its development over the following decades.
The island was once a key point for river navigation on the Seine before becoming a residential area. Today visitors can see traces of structures that reflect this earlier purpose.
The island is only accessible on foot or by bicycle via a footbridge from the right bank. Visitors should expect limited access and check in advance about any restrictions.
The island was long isolated by a lock system that controlled river traffic. This system was later abandoned, fundamentally changing how the site was used and understood.
