Bionne tower, radio and television transmitter from Montpellier, France

Welcome to Montpellier, a beautiful city located in the south of France. One of the most iconic landmarks of this city is the Tour de Bionne, also known as the Bionne Tower. This tower serves as a broadcasting station for radio and mobile phone networks and is situated in the Cévennes neighborhood on the western side of Montpellier. The Bionne Tower is owned by the Télédiffusion de France company and was constructed in 1979. It is the tallest building in Montpellier and the Hérault department, standing at a height of 100 meters. The tower is located on a hill that reaches an altitude of 80 or 81 meters. Due to its height, the tower requires aerial signaling lights to ensure visibility for aircraft. In 2009, additional antennas were installed on the tower, increasing its height to between 114 and 118 meters. In 2020, new antenna installations brought the tower's height up to between 119 and 119.5 meters. During the month of July 2022, there was a vegetation fire near the tower, but it was quickly contained and did not cause any damage to the structure. The Bionne Tower is an important broadcasting station for FM radio, covering Montpellier and its surrounding areas. Many mobile phone operators also use the tower for their transmissions. TDF communicates via microwave links through this tower, as does the operator E*Message for radio messaging. Visitors can admire the tower from afar, but unfortunately, it is not open to the public for tours. However, the surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and picnicking. Overall, the Bionne Tower is a fascinating landmark in Montpellier, showcasing the city's technological advancements and serving as an important hub for communication networks.
