Étang de Palo

The Étang de Palo extends over 212 hectares along the eastern coast of Corsica, featuring an average depth of one meter and a sandbar separating it from the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The lagoon formed approximately 6,000 years ago during post-glacial warming when a coastal depression became isolated from the sea by accumulated sand deposits.

Local fishermen maintain traditional practices in the lagoon, harvesting eels and mullets while producing bottarga from carefully processed fish roe.

The lagoon connects to the Tyrrhenian Sea through a narrow channel that opens periodically to release nutrient-rich water and prevent water quality degradation.

The wetland hosts 110 bird species and contains one of the largest salt marsh areas in Corsica, supporting diverse biotopes with varying moisture and salinity levels.
