Argol Parish close, Parish close in Argol, Finistère, France

The Argol Parish close is the only parish close on the Crozon peninsula, comprising the church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, a calvary, an ossuary and a triumphal gate. The church's west gable carries a belfry lintel dated 1582, and the monumental entrance has a semicircular central arch with fluted pilasters and Ionic capitals, flanked by two side arches, with a pediment inscribed 1659.

The church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was built in 1575, restored in 1617 and enlarged in 1674; its side walls were rebuilt in 1784 and the porch in 1839, while the belfry lintel on the west gable bears the date 1582. The calvary was carved from kersanton stone in 1593, the ossuary built in Renaissance style in 1665, and the triumphal entrance arch carries the date 1659. Church and triumphal arch were listed as historical monuments in 1914.

The name Argol derives from Breton for "in danger of dying", linked to the legend of King Gradlon's daughter Dahut, who is said to have died here when the city of Ys was engulfed by the sea. The calvary's octagonal shaft carries a statue of Saint Peter or Saint Clément, and an escutcheon shows a dove holding a twig, the arms of Abbot Briant of Landévennec (1608–1632).

The complex stands in the village of Argol, the only parish close on the Crozon peninsula. The church and the 1659 triumphal arch face the cemetery, where the 1593 calvary stands on a granite base. A 3-metre equestrian statue of King Gradlon stands just outside the enclosure. The sign on the low wall points left toward the Maison des vieux métiers vivants.

The 3-metre equestrian statue of King Gradlon stands just outside the close, not on the triumphal arch itself. Its right side gives the Christian version of the Ys legend, its left the pagan one, and the small equestrian figure on the pediment is a separate, smaller depiction of the same king.
