Château d'Orcher

Château d'Orcher is a medieval castle perched on a cliff above the Seine, with a square crenellated tower as its main feature. The structure comprises multiple towers within a trapezoidal enclosure and carefully maintained gardens.

After partial destruction in 1360, the fortress was rebuilt and survived subsequent conflicts. During the 18th century, it was transformed into a residential château reflecting the lifestyle of French aristocracy.

The castle displays features from different eras, as successive owners adapted it to suit their changing needs. Visitors today see both medieval fortification elements and residential spaces added much later.

Guided tours are available year-round and offer insights into the architecture and history. The clifftop location means uneven paths, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

The defensive layout was ahead of its time, combining three towers with a trapezoidal enclosure for maximum efficiency. This unusual geometric arrangement allowed better sightlines and field coverage.
