Château de Berthier, Castle and listed historic monument in Pinsaguel, France

The Château de Berthier, also called the Château des Confluences, is a listed historic monument in Pinsaguel, a village just south of Toulouse. The main building is made of red brick and stone, with two floors, a facade decorated with pilasters and a triangular pediment, and curved wings on each side enclosing a central courtyard.

The origins of the site go back to at least the 13th century, when it belonged to the counts of Toulouse and later passed to the French crown. In 1494, Simon de Bertier acquired the property, and in 1754 the old fortress was demolished and rebuilt in the neoclassical style it has today.

The château is also known as the Château des Confluences, a name that reflects its position near where the Garonne and Ariège rivers meet. This second name is used today by the town of Pinsaguel, which bought the property and is opening it as a gateway to the nearby natural reserve.

The château is located in the center of Pinsaguel, a short drive south of Toulouse, and can also be reached by local transport. As the site is currently undergoing renovation, it is worth checking in advance which parts are open to visitors.

During the French Revolution, the château escaped demolition by being converted into a town hall, a use that continued for a long time afterward. The two towers that survived the 1754 rebuilding, known as the Tour du Maure and the Tour Rouge, are the only visible remnants of the medieval fortress that once stood here.
