Château des Anglais, Historic monument in Brengues, France

The Château des Anglais de Brengues is a medieval cliff fortress built in the 12th century, set into a rocky overhang high above the Célé river in the village of Brengues, in the Lot department of France. The structure has two levels: the lower one served as a guard room with latrines, while the upper floor, known as the noble floor, had three arched windows overlooking the valley.

The roque of Brengues belonged to the Barasc de Béduer family in the 13th century, then passed to a branch of the Cardaillac family, the Cardaillac-Brengues. The surviving high wall, with its bays and a round-arched door of small voussoirs, places construction in the 12th century. A few hundred metres south, a wall with an ogival door and a cross-shaped arrow slit was probably added in 1347, according to Valérie Rousset. In 1504 the seigneurie of Brengues was held by Jean de Cardaillac.

The name "Château des Anglais" means "Castle of the English," even though no English soldiers actually lived there. The name comes from the Hundred Years War period, when English-speaking mercenaries were active in the region and left a lasting impression on local memory.

The interior of the château is closed to visitors, but it can be seen clearly from a cliff trail that starts near the village. The path climbs along the rock face and requires some effort, so comfortable shoes and a reasonable level of fitness are helpful.

The ruins are privately owned, not municipal property, and have been listed as a monument historique since 30 October 1925. The surviving high wall, with its arched openings and a round-arched door built of small voussoirs, is what places the construction in the 12th century. A few hundred metres south, a separate wall section has a pointed arch and a cross-shaped arrow slit, added in 1347 according to Valérie Rousset.
