Torra di Lozari, Genoese coastal defense tower in Belgodère, France
Torra di Lozari is a cylindrical stone tower on the Corsican coast, standing at about 32 meters elevation and featuring a circular base. The upper portion of the structure shows significant damage and clear signs of age and deterioration.
The structure was built in 1573 by master mason Angelo Aijcardo as a coastal defense. A pirate attack in 1584 caused severe damage that led to the tower's current ruined condition.
The tower takes its name from a nearby location and is seen by visitors today as a remnant from a time when such structures protected the coast from attacks. The ruin tells of daily life on this island during that era.
You can reach the tower via two routes: a short walk from the beach or a hiking path from National Road 197. Both routes are relatively easy to walk and offer different views of the coastline.
Inside, there is a polygonal barrel vault made from large flat stones and white lime mortar. This vault shows the sophisticated construction techniques that were used at the time.
