Gueudecourt Memorial, World War I memorial in Gueudecourt, France.
A bronze caribou statue stands on a granite cairn, overlooking the former battlefield where the Royal Newfoundland Regiment fought during World War I.
The Royal Newfoundland Regiment captured and secured Hilt Trench on October 12, 1916, marking their furthest advance during the Battle of the Somme.
The memorial features a bronze caribou, designed by sculptor Basil Gotto, representing the national symbol of Newfoundland and the regiment's determination.
The memorial site lies one kilometer northeast of Gueudecourt village and can be accessed from the Albert-Bapaume Road by following signs north along D 74E.
During the 55-hour battle, 239 Newfoundland soldiers became casualties while successfully holding their position, an achievement few units accomplished on the British Fourth Army front.
