Abbaye de Forest-Montiers, Medieval Benedictine abbey in Forest-Montiers, France
The stone structures of Forest-Montiers Abbey occupy a rural setting within the Somme department of northern France, at an elevation of 22 meters.
Founded in 640 by Riquier de Centule who lived as a hermit in the Crécy forest, the abbey maintained its religious functions for 1127 years until its closure in 1767.
The monastery served as a religious center for Benedictine monks who dedicated their practices to Notre-Dame while managing extensive agricultural lands in the region.
The former abbey grounds now function as a private farm, maintained by the descendants of the families who acquired the property during the 1793 sale.
Charles II of Orleans received his final sacraments at this abbey in 1545 when he contracted the plague during his stay at the monastery.
