Chartreuse du Précieux Sang de Nonenque, Carthusian monastery in Marnhagues-et-Latour, France
Chartreuse du Précieux Sang de Nonenque is a Carthusian monastery situated in a secluded valley surrounded by the rocky plateaus of Larzac in southern France. The religious community built this compound as a self-contained refuge with residential quarters, prayer spaces, and domestic facilities arranged within protective walls.
The monastery began as a Cistercian priory in the 1100s before being transformed into a Carthusian convent for women. In the 1730s, Abbess Charlotte d'Estaing oversaw substantial reconstruction that gave the community modern facilities for its religious life.
The Carthusian nuns maintain a strict schedule of liturgical services, starting with Matins and Lauds, while spending their days in contemplative solitude.
The monastery sits in a remote hillside location that requires advance planning to visit. Access is intentionally limited since the community values seclusion for their spiritual practice.
A discrete tunnel connects the monastery to a fish pond, allowing the nuns to maintain their privacy during unannounced visits to the grounds.
