Historical museum of Mulhouse

The Historical Museum occupies a former Renaissance town hall built in 1552 that displays impressive architecture from that period. Inside, the collections are organized into sections covering local archaeology, the city's development, and regional folk art.

The museum was founded in 1858 and opened to the public in 1874, with its collection growing from an initial 664 objects over the decades. The holdings document how Mulhouse changed and developed across many centuries.

The exhibits display carefully recreated living spaces from different periods, showing authentic regional costumes, period furniture, and everyday household objects from the area. Walking through these rooms reveals how families in the region lived and what mattered to them in their daily lives.

You can visit daily except Tuesdays from 13:00 to 18:30, with time to explore the rooms at your own pace. Guided tours are available in French, German, English, and Alsatian languages if you prefer to learn more details.

The collection spans from the Neolithic period to modern times and received the prestigious Musée de France designation in 2003. This recognition confirms the scientific importance and the quality of the collection's preservation.
