Houat, Protected natural site in Brittany, France

Located off the coast of Morbihan, this 290-hectare island exhibits diverse landforms with white and gray dunes stretching across the terrain.

The site received dual protection status under French laws from 1906 and 1930, establishing measures to preserve its natural and scientific qualities.

The local population maintains maritime traditions through fishing activities while adapting to environmental conservation requirements.

Regular ferry services connect the mainland ports of Morbihan and Loire-Atlantique to the island throughout the year.

The island supports 500 plant species, including 18 protected varieties, representing 34 percent of all spontaneous flora found in Morbihan department.
