Carrière d'Aubigny

Carrière d'Aubigny is an underground limestone quarry beneath Les Hauts de Forterre containing vast cave networks created through centuries of stone extraction. The walls throughout display tool marks and cutting patterns from different periods of quarrying activity.

This quarry began supplying limestone blocks during the 1800s when Paris underwent major construction projects. Blocks extracted here were used in the Opera House, City Hall, and numerous other structures across the city.

The site demonstrates traditional stone extraction approaches that visitors can observe through educational workshops focused on ancient cutting and processing methods.

Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the underground paths are uneven with steps and slopes throughout the site. The temperature below ground stays cool year-round, so bring a jacket and exercise caution on wet surfaces.

The tunnel walls bear marks from different quarrying tools that form a visual timeline of extraction techniques across generations. These carved signatures document how workers approached their craft over extended periods.
