Castle of Gournay-sur-Marne, Heritage castle in Gournay-sur-Marne, France.
Castle of Gournay-sur-Marne is a 17th-century manor house featuring a symmetrical front facade with two matching pavilions on either side. The side facing the Marne River includes additional ornamental details that complement the main front.
The estate was built in 1680 by Louis Ancelin, whose mother served as a nurse to King Louis XIV. The land previously held a fortress connected to the later King Henri de Navarre.
The building shows how aristocratic families of the 1600s expressed their status through architecture and design choices visible today. Visitors can see how the rooms were arranged to display wealth and refined taste through their proportions and decorative details.
The building is located on Avenue du Maréchal Foch and currently serves as the town hall. You can view the exterior anytime, and its location by the Marne River makes it a natural stop during a walk through town.
Archaeological digs in 1994 uncovered walls on the east side that show traces of an earlier structure beneath the current building. These findings suggest the site went through multiple building phases.
