Hôtel d'Avelin, Neoclassical private mansion in Lille, France.

Hôtel d'Avelin is a neoclassical mansion located at 22 rue Saint-Jacques in Lille, distinguished by a grand entrance portico with Doric columns and a formal courtyard beyond. The building comprises wings arranged around a rectangular garden space, displaying the balanced proportions and refined details typical of late 18th-century French residential design.

Built between 1777 and 1780 by architect Michel-Joseph Lequeux for the Marquis of Hangouart, it was the first neoclassical residence to appear in Lille. This pioneering design influenced the architectural choices of other wealthy residents in the city over the following decades.

The mansion reflects how wealthy families in 18th-century Lille displayed their status through architecture and interior space. The grand entrance portico and formal courtyard layout show the social customs and taste of the period's elite residents.

The mansion is located in Lille's old town near other landmarks and is clearly visible from the street. Visitors should check ahead for access information, as public visits to the building may have specific hours or require prior arrangement.

The property includes a large private garden of approximately 900 square meters, making it one of the largest green spaces found in central Lille's historic core. This secluded retreat hidden behind the neoclassical walls offers a striking contrast to the bustling street outside and hints at the private life of its affluent inhabitants.
