Statue of the Empress Joséphine, Marble monument in La Savane, Fort-de-France, Martinique.
The white marble statue stands directly across from the Schoelcher Library, depicting Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais in a standing position facing the city center.
Commissioned by Napoleon III and created by sculptor Gabriel Vital Dubray, the statue was officially inaugurated on August 29, 1859 following three years of construction.
The statue's controversial presence led to its relocation in 1974 under Mayor Aimé Césaire's administration, reflecting changing perspectives on colonial history.
The monument remains accessible to visitors at coordinates 14.6039, -61.0679, situated near the edge of La Savane park by rue de la Liberté.
In September 1991, vandals removed the statue's head, and this decapitated state has persisted, making it a symbol of resistance against colonial figures.
