Old Town Hall and Theatre, Historic monument in Fort-de-France, Martinique.
The Old Town Hall and Theatre is a neoclassical building with a central bell tower topped by a four-sided clock. Its facade displays ornamental friezes and wrought iron balconies, while the Italian-style interior holds 800 seats designed with excellent acoustics.
Building commenced in 1884 but was destroyed by fire in 1890 and a cyclone in 1891. After reconstruction it was inaugurated in September 1901.
The name honors its architect and reflects French urban traditions in the Caribbean. Today the spaces host local events and performances that shape community life.
The building sits near the city center and is easily reachable on foot. You can visit during standard hours, though checking ahead for performances or events helps plan your time there.
Inside the building stands a notable 1879 statue depicting slave emancipation. This monument marks a turning point in Martinique's social history.
