Fort Desaix

Fort Desaix is a military fort located on Morne Garnier hill at about 146 meters elevation in Fort-de-France, Martinique. The site contains 34 interior buildings, multiple bastions, and three exterior defensive structures.

The fort was built between 1765 and 1774 under architect Henri de Rochemore. It followed the defensive principles of military engineer Vauban, which proved effective for the location's protection.

The fortress shows French military design adapted for the Caribbean, where European defensive methods were modified to work with tropical weather and local terrain.

Visits here are typically available through guided tours offered mainly on weekends. It is wise to arrange in advance and bring necessary identification documents for entry.

During World War II, the site served as a secure storage location for French central bank gold reserves transported from mainland France. This secret role made it a critical safekeeping facility during wartime.
