Église du Sacré-Cœur de Balata, Neo-Byzantine church in Fort-de-France, Martinique, France.
The Sacré-Cœur de Balata Church features a central dome, Greek cross layout, and semicircular apse surrounded by an ambulatory accessing the sacristy.
Built between 1923 and 1925 by architects Charles Wulffleff and Alois Verrey, the church combines reinforced concrete with local andesite stone in its construction.
The church contains two side chapels: the northern one dedicated to Saint Joseph and the southern one to Virgin Mary, with barrel-vaulted ceilings.
The church receives 200,000 visitors annually and maintains regular religious services while undergoing a five-year restoration project starting from April 2023.
The six-ton Christ statue required a 40-ton crane and ten workers for its removal during the 7-million-euro restoration project in 2023.
