Balata Garden, Botanical garden near Fort-de-France, Martinique.
Balata Garden is a botanical collection near Fort-de-France spread across several hectares of carefully arranged tropical plants. It contains thousands of plant varieties from the Caribbean region, organized in sections that showcase different types of vegetation.
A private gardener established this collection in 1982 on former agricultural land in the area. Public access opened a few years later, transforming the site into a dedicated space for tropical plant conservation and display.
The garden serves as a learning space where visitors discover Caribbean plant species and their ecological relationships in local environments. Walking through different sections, people experience the diversity of vegetation directly and develop an appreciation for tropical biodiversity.
The grounds are open year-round with informational signs and guided tours available in various languages to help you learn about the plants. Elevated pathways make walking easy and allow everyone to observe the vegetation comfortably without rushing.
Elevated walkways run through the tree canopy, giving visitors unusual views of the plant life from above. This design simultaneously protects the vegetation below from foot traffic and damage.
