Dépôt ferroviaire de Mohon, Railroad depot in Charleville-Mézières, France
The Dépôt ferroviaire de Mohon is a railroad maintenance complex in Charleville-Mézières with two large rotundas connected by a workshop building. The facility was originally designed to accommodate thirty-two tracks for servicing and repairing locomotives.
The East Railway Company built this depot between 1906 and 1908 to replace facilities that France had lost to Germany following the 1870 war. The location responded to the need for expanded railway capacity in the remaining French network.
The site shows how railways operated in the early 20th century through its steel structures and machinery. Visitors can see how locomotives were maintained here and how the spaces were arranged for this work.
The site is open to visitors on specific occasions, typically during special events such as Heritage Days in September. Guided tours are available and advance registration is usually required.
The preserved rotunda houses historical locomotives from the Ardennes region, while the workshop still features its original bridge transporter and clock from 1908. These machines and equipment display the working techniques of railway operations from that era.
