Potager du château de la Roche-Guyon, French kitchen garden at Château de la Roche-Guyon, France

The Potager du château de la Roche-Guyon is a vegetable garden laid out in four large square sections, each divided into triangular plots. Water basins positioned at the center of each section provide irrigation for the plants grown throughout the garden.

The garden was founded in 1697 by Madeleine Le Tellier de Louvois and later reshaped by Alexandre de la Rochefoucauld in the early 18th century. These transformations established the design you see today.

The garden reflects French market gardening traditions through its organized layout and practical design for growing food. You can observe how the symmetrical beds and water features support the daily work of the gardeners tending the land.

The garden opens for visitors from July to October when fresh vegetables from the grounds are available for purchase. The castle shop also sells prepared products including juices and jams made from the harvest.

The garden preserves 24 ancient wheat varieties and two barley strains that are rarely seen elsewhere. These old seeds reveal how much more diverse crops were before modern agriculture narrowed the selection.
