La Maison du Mineur, Coal mining heritage site in La Grand-Combe, France

The facility comprises preserved headframes, machinery rooms, and underground galleries that illustrate coal mine operations from the 20th century. Exhibition pieces including pit lamps, ore carts, and ventilation systems demonstrate technical developments in the Gard department's coal industry. Buildings combine industrial architecture with functional elements adapted for mining work under Mediterranean conditions.

The former Puits Ricard opened during the peak of French coal mining and supplied fuel to the growing post-war industry. Operations expanded in the 1950s with new shafts and modernized extraction equipment before the decline of European coal industry in the 1980s led to gradual closure. Conversion into a heritage center began after mining activities ceased permanently.

This complex documents the mining community of the Cévennes region and illustrates their contribution to southern France's energy supply during industrialization. The preserved structures provide insights into social conditions and technical challenges of coal extraction in an area shaped by this industry for generations.

The facility lies in central La Grand-Combe and can be reached via the D906 from Alès, roughly 12 miles (20 kilometers) north. Guided tours through underground sections require sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing, as temperatures below ground remain consistently cool. Parking is available near the entrance, and local restaurants provide dining options within walking distance.

The mine features an underground tunnel system that allows visitors to experience the same cramped working conditions where miners operated at temperatures of 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius). Original safety equipment including rescue capsules demonstrates precautions against methane gas and cave-ins. The facility also preserves personal items belonging to workers, including individually engraved metal tokens used for identification during shifts.
