Built in 1628, it served as the residence of several notable French figures including the Marquis de Cavoye and Louis XVI's minister, Charles Gravier.

Today, it houses the offices of the French Prime Minister.
It is one of the few remaining examples of a 'hôtel particulier', a type of large townhouse of France.
