Château de La Boissière is a tall stone keep with rough grey and tan masonry, a steep dark slate roof and a pointed turret at the top right. A red door sits in a dark opening below a small gabled projection, and two shuttered windows project near the top corners. Narrow rectangular openings, small unglazed windows and one wider arched opening at ground level pierce the lower walls.

A watchtower was built in the 12th century at the level of a ford over the Chéran, used by soldiers defending the Duchy of Anjou against the Duchy of Brittany, with floors reached by internal ladders. Around the 14th century a southern addition with a large room per floor and a staircase turret turned it into a castle, and a filling tower at the end of that century gave it its square plan and latrines. The English held it from 1356 to 1361; the seigneurie was joined to Coulonges in 1764 and the building was inscribed as a monument historique on 16 January 1987.

Abbé Angot linked the name "tour de Saint-Christophe de la Boissière" to the castle, since the parish was sometimes called Saint-Christophe-de-la-Boissière. The seigneurie was joined to the châtellenie of Coulonges, in Châtelais, in 1764. From the 17th century the châtelain or a farmer lived on site; farmers are recorded in 1631 and 1699.

The castle stands 500 metres from the village of La Boissière and is a private property open to visitors only on certain summer days. The surviving building is a tall, narrow block, and one side of the wide moat that once defended it is still visible. The grounds are uneven, so wear sturdy shoes.

The castle's name is misleading: the seigneurie was not a true châtellenie, since it held neither fairs nor contract seals, and it was held by homage to the châtellenie of Savonnières. Around 1860 René-Jean Pommerais, justice of the peace at Craon, found a megalithic enclosure in the Fontenelles field near the castle.
