Château de Lancin, 19th-century castle in Courtenay, France.
Château de Lancin is a late 19th-century castle in Courtenay featuring neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance architectural elements with decorated facades in the Second Empire style. The estate includes stables and a caretaker's house that display different vernacular construction methods, forming a complete residential complex.
Architect Louis Rigoct designed this residence in the late 1800s for Mr. Caquet d'Avaize, with decorative elements created by artisans from Lyon. The estate received protection as a historical monument in 2014, safeguarding the entire architectural complex and its hydraulic systems.
The castle displays original interior decorations with wall paintings, mirrors, walnut woodwork, and stained glass windows that reflect the taste of wealthy residents in the 1800s. These details show how the household expressed its status through fine craftsmanship and refined finishes.
The estate is best explored on foot, as it consists of several buildings spread across the grounds. Visitors should allow time to examine the architectural details on the facades and notice the differences between the various structures.
The stables and caretaker's house employ vernacular construction methods that are intentionally simpler than the main building. This architectural contrast reveals how social hierarchies in the 1800s were expressed even in the design of service buildings.
