Abbaye de Mègemont, Cistercian abbey in Chassagne, France.
Abbaye de Mègemont is a Cistercian abbey situated in a valley at about 900 meters elevation. It combines a 13th-century transept and choir with conventual buildings constructed in the 18th century.
The abbey was founded in 1206 by a count from Auvergne as a convent for nuns. It later became affiliated with Montpeyroux and was sold as state property during the 1793 Revolution.
The site displays characteristic Cistercian architectural features visible in its vaulted rooms and stucco decorations throughout the buildings. These design choices shape how the place looks and feels when you walk through it.
Access is seasonal and limited to certain days of the week. Plan your visit during warmer months and wear comfortable shoes, as you will walk through the grounds on foot.
The abbey is a signatory of the European Charter of Cistercian Abbeys and preserves its medieval setting in its original natural landscape. This commitment makes it a rare example of continuity in a historical cultural landscape.
