Château d'Aunay-les-Bois, 18th-century historical castle in Aunay-les-Bois, France.
Château d'Aunay-les-Bois is an 18th-century estate with a central block built in pyramidal form and framed by narrow square pavilions on either side. The structure displays symmetrical stone facades characteristic of Norman noble residences from that period.
The estate was built around 1700 and served as the principal residence of the Bonvoust family through the late 1700s, after which its use changed over time. Its facades and roofs were officially registered as historical monuments in 1971.
The facades with their refined stonework reflect the building traditions of the Normandy region, and visitors can see how the noble classes expressed their status through architectural choices. The registered monument shows the craftsmanship valued in this area during the 18th century.
The building is currently closed to visitors due to significant damage from fires that occurred in recent years. You can view the exterior and architectural details from the surrounding grounds while restoration work continues.
The castle sustained severe damage from fires in 2021 and 2022 that destroyed parts of the interior, leaving it dependent on donations and community support for its restoration. This situation highlights the challenges faced by many historical properties in preserving their heritage without adequate financial resources.
