Château de Rânes

Château de Rânes, Medieval castle and museum in Rânes, France

Château de Rânes is a fortified structure featuring a 15th-century tower and an 18th-century main building, with the eastern facade displaying architectural elements from both periods. The interior spaces blend medieval elements with later architectural additions.

A fire in 1719 destroyed significant portions of the original fortress and required extensive work. Marshal Louis d'Argouges oversaw the reconstruction and expanded the structure to create its present form.

The castle houses a significant collection of prehistoric objects from the region, showcasing the archaeological heritage of the area. The displayed pieces offer insight into the lives of early inhabitants who lived nearby.

The site is normally accessible Tuesday through Friday, and during warmer months, visitors can join guided tours of the tower. It is wise to check ahead whether the planned route is open for your intended visit.

The tower contains markings that are attributed to a fairy according to local folklore. This folkloric feature gives the place its own special character.
