Château d'Outrelaize

Château d'Outrelaize is a castle built starting in 1604 with a main wing showing architectural details inspired by Parisian design. The estate includes an entrance pavilion with two wings, a dovecote, and various garden structures such as grottos and bridges throughout the grounds.

The castle arose when attorney general Gaspard Le Marchant purchased the Outrelaize lands in 1569 and began construction in 1584. The completion of the main wing around 1604 reflected the wealth and political standing of his family.

The surrounding grounds display an ornate grotto with water effects, stone bridges, and pathways that visitors encounter naturally while walking. These features show how 17th-century estates combined architecture and engineering to impress and entertain guests.

Comfortable footwear is recommended since pathways through the park are uneven and include several steps. It is advisable to check opening hours beforehand, as the castle is not open to visitors every day.

The castle features a remarkable automated grotto whose water mechanisms were designed by artisans who also worked on royal gardens. This technical achievement was rare in the 17th century and demonstrated the owner's considerable resources.
