Château de Saint-Bonnet-les-Oules

The Château de Saint-Bonnet-les-Oules is a fortified residence with defensive towers, a moat, and thick stone walls built on foundations from the 12th century. The building combines medieval defensive features with Renaissance details added later, including large entrance gates and structured courtyards.

The estate was built in the late 12th century as a fortified house for the Counts of Forez and underwent major rebuilding in the 13th century. Renaissance and 19th-century modifications further shaped its appearance and character.

The castle carries the name of its founding saint and reflects how local nobility shaped the settlement over centuries. Visitors can see how domestic spaces and defensive features blend within the stone walls, showing daily life choices of past residents.

Access is through the main gate and the walls are walkable on foot, with sturdy shoes recommended for uneven stone surfaces. The inner courtyards offer shade and are easy to explore, especially on warmer days.

Frescoes from the 17th century decorate the interior spaces and show the artistic skill associated with this residence. A grand staircase from the 19th century also reveals how later owners updated the estate with new materials and techniques.
