Château de Saint-Maur, Historical castle in Argent-sur-Sauldre, France
Château de Saint-Maur is a neoclassical castle in Argent-sur-Sauldre featuring a U-shaped layout with a central courtyard. The main buildings face toward the church while multiple dependencies are organized around a quadrangular courtyard.
Nicolas Dupré de Saint-Maur acquired the estate in 1765 and commissioned architect Victor Louis to redesign the entire complex. This transformation shaped the neoclassical form visible today.
The main building now houses the Museum of Traditional Crafts, displaying rural and industrial artifacts from the nineteenth century. These collections reflect how people lived and worked in that era.
The site is open seasonally from Easter through mid-October, with extended visiting hours during summer months from mid-May to mid-September. Check conditions beforehand as access may vary depending on events or special circumstances.
The Temple of Bacchus in the gardens rises above the grounds where vineyards once grew during the eighteenth century. This garden structure reveals how the landscape was once used for wine production.
