Fort du Camp-des-Romains, Military fort in Saint-Mihiel, France
Fort du Camp-des-Romains is a fortified structure perched on a rocky ridge at 380 meters elevation, overlooking the Meuse Valley. The fort was built with multiple levels and defensive works to control movement along regional roads below.
The fort was built after the 1870s conflict between France and Germany to fill a gap in regional defenses. Construction took place between 1875 and 1878 as part of a broader defensive network planned by military engineers.
The name reflects ancient Roman military camps that once occupied this hilltop. Visitors can sense the long military tradition of the region, which runs from Roman times through to the modern fort that stands here.
The fort is not open to visitors as it remains under French military control with public access restricted for safety reasons. You can view it from the surrounding area and appreciate its commanding position on the hilltop.
During the First World War, the newly completed fortification was quickly captured by German forces and repurposed as an observation post. This dramatic reversal highlights how rapidly the conflict changed the fort's role and allegiance.
