Castle of Courgent

Castle of Courgent is a medieval fortress positioned on a hilltop overlooking the Mantes valley and Vaucouleurs river below. The three-story structure houses a grand salon, dining room, kitchen, and multiple bedrooms distributed across its interior levels.

The fortress originated in medieval times and passed through multiple owners across centuries. In 1870 it was sold at auction to new inhabitants, eventually becoming the residence of a Paris gentleman around 1875.

The castle served as home to the artistic Flameng family during the 19th century, when both members gained recognition for their contributions to French art. Their residence here connected the property to cultural life beyond its immediate surroundings.

The site is best explored at a leisurely pace, allowing time to move through the different levels and take in the views. Comfortable shoes are recommended due to the hillside location and the need to navigate the building's multiple floors.

The castle was built directly upon natural rock formations, which were incorporated into its structural foundation rather than removed. This geological integration makes the building a fascinating blend of natural features and human construction.
