These markets spread across multiple historic squares in the old town and feature approximately 180 stalls selling crafts, food, and seasonal decorations. The stalls use the protected buildings and squares as their backdrop, creating a festive setting within a medieval framework.

Colmar continues the Alsatian Christkindelsmärik tradition founded in Strasbourg in 1570. In the late 1980s the market was still modest; during the 1990s it grew rapidly into an international attraction drawing about 1.5 million visitors a year, some 45% from abroad. In 2017 it was named the most beautiful Christmas market in France, and in 2018 a new market opened on the Cathedral square.

Local artisans and producers showcase their work including ceramics, glassware, and regional foods like wine and gingerbread. These crafts reflect traditions that have been part of community life for generations.

The six markets are separate mini-villages, so plan a route between the squares rather than expecting one continuous site. The covered artisan market sits inside the Old Customs House, giving shelter on wet days. The children's market in Little Venice includes a mechanical nativity scene, rabbits and sheep, and pony rides.

The Place des Six Montagnes Noires transforms into a children's zone where young visitors can interact with farm animals and enjoy pony rides. This particular location offers a family-friendly entry point to the market festivities.
