Chartreuse d'Aubevoye
Chartreuse d'Aubevoye, Carthusian monastery in Aubevoye, France.
Chartreuse d'Aubevoye is a Carthusian monastery featuring a central cloister bordered by individual hermitages, each with private gardens designed for meditation. The complex includes various buildings and structures arranged according to classical architectural principles to support the monks' contemplative life.
The monastery was founded in 1563 but did not begin operations until 1657, following classical architectural principles in its construction. This long gap between its establishment and actual opening reflected the gradual development needed to create a functional monastic community.
The monastery contains noteworthy artworks, including paintings by Eustache Lesueur depicting the life of Saint Bruno created between 1645 and 1648.
The site covers approximately 30 hectares with gardens and agricultural buildings enclosed by preserved walls. Plan to spend time exploring different areas to appreciate the full layout and structure of the complex.
The interior preserves carved wooden stalls and a main altar, remnants of an ornate artistic decoration from past centuries. A remarkably preserved tomb serves as a reminder of the prominent French families who found their final rest within these walls.
