Walled enclosure of Vouvant

The walled enclosure incorporates multiple defensive towers and walls constructed with crystalline schist and limestone materials throughout its perimeter.

Built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries, the fortification received official monument historique status from the French Ministry of Culture in 1984.

The fortified walls represent military architectural techniques from the Middle Ages, with features such as loopholes and raising doors throughout the structure.

Visitors can access the fortification walls during regular opening hours, with guided tours available to learn about the medieval defense system.

The enclosure contains the Tower Mélusine, which stands as the main keep of the castle and received separate historical monument designation in 1927.
