Saint-Riquier abbey church is a stone building housing a large pipe organ made from wood, tin, lead, and leather materials. The instrument sits elevated within the interior, displaying centuries of craftsmanship through its decorated wooden case.
The abbey was founded in 625 above an ancient spring and became royal property under King Dagobert. Following fires and wars, the 17th century brought major restoration work that preserved its standing as an important French monument.
The abbey church has served as a center for worship and community gatherings throughout its long existence. The pipe organ, crafted from wood and metals, continues to be played during concerts and special occasions, adding a grand presence to the interior.
Visiting is easiest during times when services are not taking place and the doors are open for tours. Evening lantern-lit walks offer a special way to explore the building and its surroundings.
The organ underwent major restoration work in 1853 by monks from nearby Valloires and has been played continuously since then. This restored instrument has successfully endured for more than 150 years.
