Moulin de la Rouzique, Watermill and museum in Couze-et-Saint-Front, France

The Moulin de la Rouzique is a partly working watermill and museum in Couze-et-Saint-Front, in the Périgord region of France, dedicated to handmade paper production. The site includes several buildings along the Couze river, with a functional waterwheel and a cylinder mould machine that together show the full papermaking process from raw fiber to finished sheet.

The site dates to the 15th century, when the Couze valley held one of the largest concentrations of paper mills in France, with dozens operating along the river at its height. Production declined sharply in the 19th century as industrial methods replaced craft workshops, and the mill was later revived as a working museum to keep the old techniques alive.

The name "Rouzique" comes from Occitan and refers to the reddish color of the local soil. Visitors can still watch craftspeople making paper from hemp, linen, and cotton fibers, continuing a tradition that shaped daily life along this river for centuries.

The mill is located on Route de Varennes, west of Couze-et-Saint-Front, and is easy to reach by car, with parking and a picnic area on site. Guided tours run mainly in the afternoon, and the site is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.

The museum holds a collection of watermarks dating back to the 15th century, made visible when paper is held up to light. These fine wire patterns were woven into the mould to identify the maker, working as a kind of invisible signature hidden inside every sheet.
