Abbaye du Puits d'Orbe

The ruins of Abbaye du Puits d'Orbe stand on a hillside between Verdonnet and Asnières-en-Montagne, with remaining entrance gate and sections of four-meter-high walls.

Founded between 1112 and 1125 under Moutiers-Saint-Jean Abbey authority, the monastery received many noble heiresses, ensuring its prosperity until the Hundred Years War.

The Saint-Barthélémy church in Verdonnet houses notable statues from the abbey, including a 14th-century Madonna and Child classified as a historical monument in 1964.

The archaeological site requires advance planning for visits as it contains limited facilities and stands between two municipalities in northern Burgundy-Franche-Comté.

The monastery functioned as a women's Benedictine abbey until 1641, when its community relocated to Châtillon-sur-Seine following unsuccessful reform attempts by François de Sales.
