Prairies Saint-Martin, Public park in northern Rennes, France
Prairies Saint-Martin is a large park north of the city center with meadows stretching between the Ille-et-Rance canal and a natural river course. The grounds feature walking paths, children's play areas, and grazing zones where Highland cattle naturally maintain the wet grasslands.
The area remained undeveloped for decades due to its flood-prone nature, making it unsuitable for construction. Its transformation into an ecological park began in 2017, turning the natural water-rich conditions into an asset.
The meadows function as a gathering place for locals with picnic spots and regular outdoor events including concerts and exhibitions. The petanque court and refreshment kiosk make it a social hub where people spend leisure time together.
The park is easily accessible on foot and offers various routes suitable for both walkers and families with children. The open areas and seating spots invite visitors to linger while exploring the natural surroundings.
Scientists from CNRS operate an urban ecology observatory within the park to monitor wildlife and environmental changes over time. This research presence makes the site a living laboratory for studying nature within the city.
