Château de Châteaubodeau

Château de Châteaubodeau, Medieval castle in Rougnat, France.

Château de Châteaubodeau is a stone fortified structure located near the Cher River, featuring defensive elements like machicolations designed for medieval warfare. The complex includes a large basin approximately 50 feet (15 meters) long and 33 feet (10 meters) wide that serves as a focal point of the grounds.

The castle was built in the 15th century and belonged to the Châteaubodeau family, whose members married into other noble houses such as the Mallerets. These dynastic ties shaped the castle's regional importance during medieval times.

The castle appeared in the 1991 film 'Tous les matins du monde' directed by Alain Corneau. Its rooms and stone corridors still carry a sense of that cinematic chapter in its history.

The castle sits near the Cher River and is walkable from multiple angles, allowing you to view the grounds from different perspectives. The main areas of the complex are accessible at ground level, making it straightforward to navigate around the property.

Inside the castle stands a large wooden fireplace carved around 1650 that reflects the skilled craftwork of that period. This intricately decorated hearth often goes unnoticed by visitors focused on the building's exterior features.
