Cascade de Syratu, Waterfalls in Mouthier-Haute-Pierre, France.
Cascade de Syratu is a waterfall with three distinct sections, the uppermost featuring a sheer drop of about 50 meters from a plateau at 600 meters elevation. The entire feature spans about 230 meters in height as it descends through wooded terrain before meeting the Loue River.
The water course was redirected during construction of the Gorges de Nouailles road to prevent flow onto the roadway. This intervention reflects how infrastructure development had to adapt to the natural landscape.
The waterfall serves as a meeting point along the GR 590 hiking trail, where visitors experience the raw power of flowing water in a limestone gorge. Local hikers value this location as a tangible connection to the untamed Jura landscape.
The lower section is accessible via an old bridge crossing the Loue River, while the middle section can be viewed directly from the mountain road. The best time to visit is after rainfall when water volume is at its fullest.
The lower sections are draped in tufa deposits that give the water a milky appearance when sunlight filters through them. This geological feature develops as water continuously flows over the limestone-rich rocks of the Jura.
